Stop and Start function

This system enables a reduced fuel consumption and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
The system is activated automatically when the vehicle is started.
While driving, the system stops the engine (standby) when the vehicle is at a standstill (traffic jam, traffic lights, etc).
Tip
The rear-wheel drive versions are not equipped with the "Stop and Start" function.

Conditions for engine standby

The vehicle has set off from where it was parked;
For vehicles equipped with automatic gearboxes:
  • the gearbox is in D or N position;
and
  • the brake pedal is pressed (sufficiently hard);
and
  • the accelerator pedal is not pressed;
and
  • the speed is zero for around 1 second.
The engine remains on standby if N position is engaged with the parking brake applied and the brake pedal released.
For vehicles equipped with manual gearboxes:
  • the gearbox is in neutral;
and
  • the clutch pedal is released.
If warning light flashes, this means that the clutch pedal is not sufficiently released.
and
  • the vehicle speed is less than approximately 2 mph (3 km/h).
The engine will restart when you press the clutch pedal and move into gear.
For all vehicles:
Warning light on the instrument panel is lit when the engine is on standby.
The vehicle equipment remains operational while the engine is stopped.
Tip
If the engine stalls while the system is in operation, pressing the clutch pedal right down will start it again.
Tip
To fill up with fuel, the engine must be stopped (and not put on standby): the ignition must be switched off , FUEL TANK.
Fire hazard.
Tip
If you get out of the vehicle, a beep notifies you that the engine is on standby and has not been switched off.
WARNING
Keep your vehicle stationary when the engine is on standby (shown by the warning light on the instrument panel).
WARNING
Before leaving the vehicle, the engine must be stopped (not put in standby) .

Preventing the engine from standing by

In certain situations, such as negotiating a crossroads for instance, it is possible (with the system activated) to keep the engine on so as to be ready to move off quickly.
For vehicles equipped with automatic gearboxes:
Keep the vehicle stationary without pressing too hard on the brake pedal.
For vehicles equipped with manual gearboxes:
Keep the clutch pedal pressed right down.
Tip
For vehicles equipped with a manual gearbox
The restart may be interrupted if the clutch pedal is released too quickly while a gear is engaged.

Conditions for coming out of engine standby

For vehicles equipped with automatic gearboxes:
  • the brake pedal is released and D position is engaged;
or
  • the brake pedal is released, N position is engaged and the parking brake is released;
or
  • the brake pedal is pressed again, N position is engaged and the parking brake is applied;
or
  • R position is engaged;
or
  • the accelerator pedal is depressed.
For vehicles equipped with manual gearboxes:
  • the gearbox is in neutral position and the clutch pedal is slightly pressed;
or
  • the engine is in gear and the clutch pedal is pressed right down.

Conditions preventing the standby of the engine

Certain conditions prevent the system from using the engine standby function, especially when:
  • the reverse gear is engaged;
  • the bonnet is not locked;
  • the outdoor temperature is too low or too high;
  • the battery is not sufficiently charged;
  • the difference between the vehicle interior temperature and the automatic climate control setpoint is too high;
  • the Park Assist function is in operation;
  • the altitude is too high;
  • the slope is too steep for vehicles fitted with an automatic gearbox;
  • the "Clear View" function is activated MANUAL AIR CONDITIONING, HEATING SYSTEM, AUTOMATIC CLIMATE CONTROL;
  • the engine coolant temperature is too low;
  • automatic particle filter cleaning is underway;
  • ...
The warning light appears on the instrument panel to indicate that engine standby is not available.
Special feature of the automatic engine re-start
Under certain conditions, the engine can restart on its own in order to guarantee your safety and comfort.
This may occur when:
  • the vehicle speed is above 4 mph (7 km/h) (downhill slope, etc.)
  • the brake pedal is pressed repeatedly or there is a braking system requirement;
  • ...
Note: depending on the vehicle, for some of these conditions the automatic restarting of the engine is inhibited if a door is open.
WARNING
Before carrying out any action in the engine compartment, you must switch off the ignition IGNITION SWITCH.

Deactivating, activating the function

Press the switch 1 to deactivate the function. The warning light 2 illuminates.
Pressing again will reactivate the system. The warning light 2 on the switch 1 goes out.
The system is automatically reactivated each time the vehicle is deliberately started STARTING, STOPPING THE ENGINE.

Operating faults

If the 2 warning light appears without the switch 1 having been pressed, the system is deactivated.
Consult an approved Dealer.
WARNING
Before leaving the vehicle, the engine must be stopped (not put in standby) STARTING, STOPPING THE ENGINE.
